How this calculator works
The three parts are added on a common unit of seconds and then divided by 3600 to express the whole duration in hours. Hours are not capped at 23 because this is a duration rather than a clock reading: a 40-hour week is a valid input. Minutes and seconds must stay below 60 instead of being silently carried into the next hour, which would hide a typing mistake.
Formula
total_seconds = 3600h + 60m + s. decimal_hours = total_seconds / 3600 = h + m/60 + s/3600.
Worked example
7 hours 45 minutes 30 seconds is 27930 seconds, or 7.758333 decimal hours. One second is 0.000278 decimal hours.

Frequently asked questions
Why is 7:30 not 7.30 hours?
Thirty minutes is half an hour, so 7:30 is 7.5 decimal hours. Writing 7.30 would be a 12-minute undercount.
What happens if I enter 60 minutes?
It is rejected with an out-of-range message. Enter 1 hour 0 minutes instead, so the components stay separate and unambiguous.
Does this round for payroll?
No. It reports the exact decimal value; any rounding to the nearest quarter hour or tenth is a payroll policy choice applied afterwards.
