Count hours calculator

Enter each block of hours as a number, separated by commas or spaces. Decimal hours such as 7.5 are accepted, so a timesheet can be summed without converting every entry to minutes first.

Calculator

Separate entries with commas, spaces or new lines. Use decimal hours: 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.5, and 6 hours 15 minutes is 6.25.

How this calculator works

Each entry is treated as a number of hours and added directly, so decimal hours can be summed without any mental conversion. Whole hours, half hours and quarter hours therefore mix cleanly. The total is shown again in minutes and as hours, minutes and seconds, and the eight-hour workdays figure divides the total by a standard full day, which is useful when comparing a timesheet to a staffing plan. Rounding is not applied: the exact decimal sum is reported and the display rounds only for reading.

Formula

total hours = h1 + h2 + ... + hn. total minutes = total hours x 60. total seconds = total hours x 3,600, rounded to the nearest whole second for the clock line. eight-hour workdays = total hours / 8.

Worked example

A week of 7.5, 8 and 6.25 hours totals 21.75 hours, which is 1,305 minutes, 21:45:00 on the clock and 2.71875 eight-hour workdays. Five 8-hour days total 40 hours, or 2,400 minutes and 40:00:00.

Frequently asked questions

Why enter 7.5 instead of 7:30?

A colon is clock notation, not a decimal. This page reads each entry as a plain number of hours, so 7.5 means seven and a half hours. Use the add time calculator if you prefer H:MM notation, or the hours and minutes calculator for separate hour and minute fields.

Does the total round for payroll?

No. The exact sum is reported and any rounding to the nearest quarter hour or tenth of an hour is a payroll policy applied afterwards. Rounding before summing can change the total by several minutes over a week.

Can I include overtime or breaks?

Enter the hours you want counted, so a paid break can be included and an unpaid break left out. If a break is easier to subtract, enter the shift length less the break. This page does not apply overtime multipliers or pay rates; use the time-card calculator for pay.

What is an eight-hour workday here?

It is simply the total divided by eight, a standard full day in many workplaces. It is not a legal standard and does not account for a 7.5-hour day or a compressed schedule.
