Countdown calculator

Enter a starting moment and the moment you are counting to. The page reports the gap in every common unit and marks the quarter points of the countdown.

How this calculator works

Each input is a wall-clock date and time. The calculator places both on a uniform scale with 86,400 seconds in every day, subtracts the start from the end, and reports the gap in seconds, minutes, hours and days. The years figure is the number of completed calendar years between the two dates, which is not the same as dividing the days by 365.25. The checkpoint table shows the date and time at the quarter marks, which is handy for planning a longer countdown.

Formula

elapsed seconds = U(end) - U(start), where U is the date day number times 86,400 plus the clock seconds. days = seconds / 86,400. The breakdown is whole days plus the remaining HH:MM:SS. Completed years are counted on the calendar between the two dates.

Worked example

From 2026-11-01 at 00:00 to 2027-01-01 at 00:00 is 5,270,400 seconds, which is 61 days, or 1,464 hours. The 50 percent checkpoint is 2026-12-01 at 12:00. A same-day countdown from 09:30 to 17:00 is 27,000 seconds, or 0 days and 07:30:00.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there no time zone?

The inputs are local wall-clock readings, the same model the site uses elsewhere. That makes the answer exact for a countdown you read off a clock, but a countdown across a daylight-saving change will be one hour out in real elapsed time unless you account for the change yourself.

Why do the years differ from the day count divided by 365?

Calendar years have 365 or 366 days and the two dates fall at different points in the year. The years figure counts completed anniversaries of the start date, while the day count is an exact uniform measurement. Both are correct answers to slightly different questions.

Can the countdown be negative?

No. An end before the start is reported as an error rather than a negative gap, because a backwards countdown usually means the two fields were swapped.

How are the checkpoints calculated?

The total seconds are multiplied by 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1 and added back to the start, then rounded to the nearest second. The end checkpoint always equals the end you entered.
