How this calculator works
Cost per distance is a simple allocation: the chosen costs divided by the kilometres they were incurred over. You decide whether the cost is fuel only or includes maintenance, insurance, depreciation and fees, because the calculator cannot tell which categories your figure contains. The mile figure converts the distance with the exact international mile of 1.609344 kilometres rather than a rounded factor.
Formula
cost_per_km = total_cost / distance_km. cost_per_mile = total_cost / (distance_km / 1.609344) = 1.609344 x total_cost / distance_km.
Worked example
$100 of running costs over 500 km is $0.20 per kilometre, which is about $0.321869 per mile. A zero total cost gives zero, while zero distance is rejected.

Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as a mileage allowance?
No. A tax or employer allowance is a set rate per kilometre or mile. This page shows what your own costs worked out to per unit of distance.
Which costs should I include?
Only the ones you want to allocate. Fuel alone answers an operating-cost question; adding insurance, maintenance and depreciation answers a full cost-of-ownership question.
Why is the per-mile figure larger than the per-kilometre figure?
A mile is longer than a kilometre, so it carries more cost. The ratio is always 1.609344, the number of kilometres in a mile.
