How this calculator works
Milling and grinding use depth times width times feed velocity. Turning and grooving use cut depth or groove width times feed per revolution times surface cutting speed. Drilling uses the full drill area times axial feed velocity. Turning is the usual thin-cut approximation; chip volume and interruptions are not included.
Formula
Milling/grinding Q = depth x width x feed velocity; turning/grooving Q = depth or groove width x feed per revolution x cutting speed; drilling Q = pi D^2 v_axial/4. All lengths in metres give Q in m^3/min.
Worked example
Milling 2 mm deep and 5 mm wide at 1 m/min removes 10 cm^3/min. A 10 mm drill at 0.1 m/min axial feed removes 7.85398 cm^3/min.

Frequently asked questions
Is drilling speed the surface speed?
No. Enter axial feed velocity. Multiply feed per revolution by rpm to obtain it.
Does this predict cycle time?
Divide removed volume by removal rate for cutting time only. Add approach, retract, indexing and tool changes separately.
Why can I not solve a second drilling dimension?
A full circular hole is defined by diameter and axial feed; there is no independent width dimension.
