Mode calculator

Choose numeric observations or comma- or newline-separated category labels. Repeated labels must match exactly, including case.

How this calculator works

A frequency table counts identical values. Every value tied for the highest repeated count is a mode. Numeric entries are compared as numbers, so 2 and 2.0 match; labels are case-sensitive after trimming surrounding spaces. When every distinct value occurs once, the tool follows the common no-mode convention. Category tables keep first-appearance order, while numeric tables use ascending order.

Formula

Frequency f(v) = number of observations equal to v. Modes are all v with maximum f(v), provided that maximum exceeds one.

Worked example

For 1, 1, 2, 3, 3, both 1 and 3 occur twice and are modes. For red, blue, red, the mode is red with frequency 2.

Frequently asked questions

Can a data set have several modes?

Yes. Equal highest repeated counts produce tied modes, all of which are listed.

Are Red and red the same category?

No. Standardise spelling and case before entry if they represent the same category.

Can a label contain commas?

No. Commas and new lines delimit labels. Use a different spelling or abbreviation for a label containing either separator.
