How this calculator works
Distance equals step count times the distance between successive foot contacts. A full stride contains two steps, so do not enter a full stride as one step. This page centres on miles and mile-based targets and also works backwards to step count or calibrates step length from a measured route. The average option uses an illustrative 2.5 ft step, not a population standard. Height mode starts at a rough 0.4 ratio and lets you change it. Gait, pace, terrain and individual proportions matter more than a single universal ratio.
Formula
Miles = steps x step length in metres / 1609.344. Steps = distance in metres / step length. Calibrated step length = measured distance / counted steps.
Worked example
At 2.5 ft per step, 2112 steps cover exactly 5280 ft, or 1 mile. If 1000 steps cover 1 km, calibrated step length is 1 m and that route is about 0.621371 miles.

Frequently asked questions
How do I measure step length?
Count steps along a known straight route at your usual pace, then divide the measured distance by that count. Repeat to check consistency.
Why does my watch show a different distance?
Devices estimate gait and may adjust it with pace or GPS. A constant step length is only an approximation.
Do fractional predicted steps make sense?
Reverse mode gives the arithmetic count. Round up if planning a minimum whole-step target; counted input steps must already be whole numbers.
