How this calculator works
The HEC semester system converts each letter grade to a grade point, multiplies by the course credit hours and divides by the total credit hours. A three-credit course therefore counts three times as much as a one-credit course. The cGPA extends the same calculation across semesters by adding the quality points from earlier work, which is why the previous GPA and previous credit hours are needed separately. The grade point values used here are the standard HEC-aligned ones, but universities set their own percentage bands, so a university transcript is the final authority.
Formula
quality points = sum(grade point x credit hours). GPA = quality points / semester credit hours. cGPA = (semester quality points + previous GPA x previous credit hours) / (semester credit hours + previous credit hours). Grade points: A+ and A = 4.00, A- = 3.67, B+ = 3.33, B = 3.00, B- = 2.67, C+ = 2.33, C = 2.00, C- = 1.67, D+ = 1.33, D = 1.00, F = 0.00.
Worked example
Courses of A 3, B+ 3, A- 2 and B 3 credit hours give quality points of 4.00 x 3 = 12, 3.33 x 3 = 9.99, 3.67 x 2 = 7.34 and 3.00 x 3 = 9. The total is 38.33 over 11 credit hours, so the semester GPA is 3.485. With a previous GPA of 3.20 over 33 credit hours, the cGPA is (38.33 + 3.20 x 33) / (11 + 33) = (38.33 + 105.6) / 44 = 3.271.

Frequently asked questions
Is GPA the same as cGPA?
GPA usually means one semester or one set of courses, while cGPA is the cumulative figure across every semester of the degree. The calculation is the same; cGPA simply includes all previous quality points and credit hours. A transcript may label the cumulative figure CGPA or cGPA.
What letter grades does the HEC scale use?
The common HEC-aligned sequence is A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D and F. The grade point values are 4.00, 4.00, 3.67, 3.33, 3.00, 2.67, 2.33, 2.00, 1.67, 1.33, 1.00 and 0.00. The percentage needed for each letter varies between universities.
What is a good cGPA in Pakistan?
A cGPA of 3.00 or above is generally considered good for postgraduate admission, and 3.50 or above is competitive for scholarships. Many BS programs require at least 2.00 to graduate, and some professional programs require higher. Requirements differ by university and program.
How do I handle a repeated course?
Most Pakistani universities replace the failed grade with the new grade when the course is repeated, but some average both attempts or keep the better one. Enter the grades as your university treats them, or the cGPA will not match the transcript.
