How this calculator works

Isolate y by moving Ax to the right and dividing both sides by B. The coefficient of x becomes the slope, and the remaining constant becomes the y intercept. Conversion back chooses B=1, giving -mx+y=b; multiplying all coefficients by any nonzero number gives an equivalent standard equation. Coefficients may be decimals and are not forced into integer form. A standard equation with B=0 represents a vertical line when A is nonzero.

Formula

Ax+By=C implies y=(-A/B)x+C/B for B nonzero. Conversely y=mx+b implies -mx+y=b.

Worked example

For 4x+2y=10, subtract 4x and divide by 2 to obtain y=-2x+5. Its slope is -2 and its y intercept is 5. Converting y=3x-4 back gives -3x+y=-4.

Frequently asked questions

What if my equation is Ax+By+C=0?

Move its constant to the right first. Enter the negative of that constant in this calculator.

Why does my standard equation look different?

Standard coefficients are not unique. For example, 2x+y=5 and 4x+2y=10 describe the same line.

Can B be zero?

Yes. The result identifies a vertical line and omits numeric slope and y-intercept outputs.

Are fractions supported?

Enter their decimal values. Numeric results retain floating-point precision, while the readout controls display rounding.
