How this calculator works
Inverse variation keeps the product xy fixed. Doubling a non-zero x halves y. A genuine inverse relationship has non-zero k and excludes x = 0; solving for x also requires y to be non-zero. Negative values are allowed and describe the other hyperbola branches.
Formula
y = k/x; x = k/y; k = xy.
Worked example
If k = 24 and x = 6, then y = 24/6 = 4. If x becomes 12, y becomes 2, and their product remains 24.

Frequently asked questions
Can the values be negative?
Yes. Signs are preserved in the multiplication and division, and the constant may be negative.
Are physical units converted?
No. Enter values in units consistent with the equation. The units of k depend on the units used for x and y.
Why is a zero denominator rejected?
Division by zero cannot determine a finite unique value. Supply a non-zero independent value or constant as required by the selected mode.
