How this calculator works
Compare positions on the number line: the value farther right is greater. The difference a - b is positive when a is greater and negative when a is smaller. Fraction inputs are converted to numeric values, so extremely close rational values may become indistinguishable at computer precision.
Formula
a > b if a - b > 0; a < b if a - b < 0; a = b when their numeric values match.
Worked example
3/4 = 0.75 is greater than 2/3, about 0.6667. Among -5 and -2, -5 is less because it lies farther left on the number line.

Frequently asked questions
Which way does the sign point?
The narrow end points toward the smaller value. The open side faces the larger value.
Can two different fractions be equal?
Yes. For example, 1/2 and 2/4 describe the same number.
Why is -2 greater than -5?
-2 is closer to zero on the right side of -5 on the number line.
