How this calculator works

This focused page uses the 2023 DRI adult EER model for healthy, non-pregnant and non-lactating adults. It reports maintenance energy without adding a dieting adjustment. A weekly value is seven identical days, not a recommendation to vary intake. Inactive, low active, active and very active adult PAL bands are below 1.53, 1.53 to below 1.68, 1.68 to below 1.85 and 1.85 to below 2.50. The result is an estimate for information only and is not medical advice.

Formula

Daily energy = the activity-specific adult EER regression. Weekly energy = 7 x daily energy. Inactive male EER = 753.07 - 10.83 x age + 6.50 x cm + 14.10 x kg.

Worked example

For an inactive 30-year-old man at 170 cm and 70 kg, daily energy is 2520.17 kcal and the seven-day total is 17641.19 kcal.

Frequently asked questions

Does a single number mean my needs are exact?

No. The regression predicts a group average; usual weight trends help assess energy balance.

Why is this different from multiplying BMR?

EER estimates total expenditure directly using separate activity-specific equations, rather than multiplying resting energy by a generic exercise factor.

What if I need pregnancy or child estimates?

Use the EER calculator, which includes growth and life-stage inputs.
