How this calculator works
The original BODE index combines body mass index, airflow obstruction, dyspnoea and exercise capacity for adults with COPD. BMI contributes 0 or 1 point, and each other component contributes 0 to 3. This page uses the original category bands rather than interpolating between them. A higher score indicated worse prognosis in the validation cohorts, but does not provide an individual survival prediction. The result is an estimate for information only and is not medical advice.
Formula
BODE = BMI points + FEV1 points + mMRC points + walk points. BMI >21: 0; BMI ≤21: 1. FEV1 categories ≥65%, 50-64%, 36-49%, ≤35% score 0,1,2,3. mMRC grades 0-1,2,3,4 score 0,1,2,3. Walk ≥350 m, 250 to <350 m, 150 to <250 m, <150 m scores 0,1,2,3.
Worked example
BMI 20, FEV1 50-64% predicted, mMRC grade 2 and a 300 m walk contribute 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 4. BMI 24 with FEV1 at least 65%, mMRC 0-1 and a 350 m walk gives 0.

Frequently asked questions
Why use an FEV1 category?
The original instrument specifies integer percentage bands. Selecting the assessed band avoids inventing a rule for fractional values between the published cutoffs.
Can I assess mMRC using this page?
Enter the grade already assessed using the published mMRC scale. This calculator adds points; it does not administer a separate dyspnoea questionnaire.
Does this give my life expectancy?
No. The index describes cohort prognosis and requires professional interpretation in the context of current treatment and health.
