How this calculator works

Use all quits, dismissals, layoffs, retirements and other separations in the same period. Replacements still count as separations. Average opening and closing headcount, or enter a more representative measured average. A rate above 100% is possible when roles turn over repeatedly. Reverse calculations can return a fractional planning estimate.

Formula

Average headcount = (opening + closing headcount)/2. Turnover = separations/average headcount. Separations = turnover x average headcount.

Worked example

A business averages 200 employees and records 30 departures, including replaced staff. Turnover is 30/200 = 15%. With 120 departures and average headcount of 80, turnover is 150%.

Frequently asked questions

Does turnover include replacements?

Yes. Count all separations, whether or not the departing employee is replaced.

How does this relate to attrition?

The related attrition page discusses departures without replacement. Keep your reporting definition consistent when comparing employers.

Is this the BLS published separation rate?

No. BLS supplies the separation categories, but its published rate uses its own employment denominator. This tool uses your selected period average.
