How this calculator works

This is a calendar estimate, not a payroll calculation. A five-day week leaves two days off each week, which is 104 weekend days over 52 weeks, while a four-day week leaves 156. Statutory holidays add the national count for the chosen country plus any local days you enter. Vacation and paid sick days are added at their full value because they are days you are not working. Subtracting the total from 365 gives the approximate working days, and multiplying by the hours in an average working day gives the hours off. Because statutory holidays sometimes fall on a weekend and a normal working week is not exactly 52 weeks, treat the result as a planning estimate.

Formula

Weekend days = (7 - days worked per week) x 52. Statutory holidays = national holidays + extra local holidays. Total days off = weekend days + statutory holidays + vacation days + sick days. Working days = 365 - total days off. Hours in a working day = hours per week / days worked per week. Hours off = total days off x hours in a working day.

Worked example

A full-time employee in Canada working 5 days and 40 hours a week has 2 x 52 = 104 weekend days and 9 national holidays. With 10 vacation days and 5 sick days, the total is 128 days off, leaving 237 working days. A working day averages 40 / 5 = 8 hours, so the time off comes to 1,024 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Are provincial or state holidays included?

No. The country count covers holidays observed nationally: federal holidays in the United States, the eight bank holidays of England and Wales, and the federally observed holidays in Canada. Scotland, Northern Ireland, the provinces, the states and municipalities differ, so add their extra days in the local holidays field.

Why is the total slightly off from my calendar?

The estimate uses 52 weeks and 365 days, and it counts a statutory holiday that falls on a Saturday as a day off even though it would have been a weekend day anyway. Real calendars have 52 weeks plus a day or two, and some employers substitute holidays with a nearby weekday.

Do contractors get paid holidays?

Usually not. The work pattern affects how many weekdays are free, but the vacation and sick fields are yours to set. For an unpaid contractor, enter zero paid leave if you want to measure paid time off, or keep the leave you actually take if you want to measure all time away from work.
