How this calculator works
Each percentage removes a share of the price available at that step. Choose the unknown quantity; its field disappears and the remaining fields supply the calculation. Prices use Canadian dollars and exclude tax, delivery and rebates. A zero original price is valid when calculating the sale price. A fully removed price cannot determine a unique original price or a later discount.
Formula
Final price = original price x product of (1 - each discount fraction). Savings = original - final. Effective discount = 1 - product of retained fractions. To recover one missing rate, divide the final price by the original price and all the other retained fractions, then subtract from 1.
Worked example
Starting at $100, 20% off leaves $80 and another 10% off leaves $72. The saving is $28, or 28%. Two 50% reductions on $80 leave $20, a 75% effective discount.

Frequently asked questions
Can I add the discount percentages?
For successive reductions, multiply the remaining fractions. The later rate applies to a smaller price, so adding rates overstates the saving.
Can I find the original price?
Yes. Select original price and provide the final price and each rate. All rates must leave a positive retained fraction for a unique answer.
When should I add sales tax?
Apply the relevant tax rules after determining the selling price. This tool reports merchandise values before tax and does not decide coupon tax treatment.
