How this calculator works
A tablecloth hangs over the edge on every side, so each dimension is the table dimension plus twice the drop. For a rectangle or oval that means length plus two drops and width plus two drops; for a round table it is the diameter plus two drops. A lap-length drop of about 30 cm is the usual choice for a dining table, while a floor-length drop uses the table height, a little less to clear the floor. A custom drop lets you match a cloth to a specific look or an existing table.
Formula
cloth length = table length + 2 x drop. cloth width = table width + 2 x drop. round cloth diameter = table diameter + 2 x drop. floor drop = table height - 1 cm.
Worked example
A 180 by 90 cm rectangular table with a 30 cm lap drop needs a cloth 180 + 60 = 240 cm long and 90 + 60 = 150 cm wide. For floor length on a 75 cm table the drop is 74 cm, giving 328 by 238 cm.

Frequently asked questions
What is a standard drop for a dining table?
About 25 to 30 cm, which puts the cloth at lap height when seated. A shorter 15 to 20 cm drop looks more casual, and a floor-length drop is for a formal look. The drop should be the same on every side.
How do I convert to inches?
Divide the centimetre figure by 2.54. The 240 by 150 cm example is about 94.5 by 59 inches. Tablecloth sizes are often sold in both systems, but the centimetre measurement is the one to compare with the table.
Does the cloth shrink?
Cotton and linen tablecloths can shrink 3 to 5 percent in the first wash. If the cloth will be washed often, buy a size with a little extra drop or pre-wash the fabric before hemming it.
What about an oval table?
An oval table uses the same length-plus-two-drops and width-plus-two-drops rule. A rectangular cloth can work, but an oval or oval-cut cloth follows the table better. Measure the longest and widest points of the tabletop.
