How this calculator works
A dress has to fit three measurements, so a size that fits the bust may be tight at the hip. The calculator looks up the smallest chart size whose bust is at least your bust, and repeats for the waist and the hips. The overall suggestion is the largest of the three, because a garment can be taken in but not let out. The UK size is four above the US size and the European size is 32 above in the tops convention used here. These are body measurements, not the measurements of a finished garment; ease is already built into the pattern, and brands vary.
Formula
bust size = the first chart size whose bust measurement is at least your bust. waist size and hip size use the same rule. overall size = the largest of the three. UK = US + 4. EU = US + 32.
Worked example
A bust of 90 cm, waist of 71 cm and hips of 98 cm points to US 8 for the bust, US 8 for the waist and US 8 for the hips. The overall suggestion is US 8, which is UK 12 and EU 40, with an international letter M.

Frequently asked questions
Why use the largest of the three sizes?
A dress that is slightly large can be altered, but one that is too small cannot be made bigger without extra fabric. Starting from the largest requirement also accounts for the fact that sizing charts are averages, not guarantees.
Are US and UK sizes really four apart?
In the misses range, UK 8 corresponds to US 4, UK 12 to US 8, so the difference is four. Children's and plus sizes use different offsets, and some brands label differently, so always check the maker chart.
What does European size 42 mean?
It is a label in the European sizing system, not a measurement. EU 42 is close to US 10 in the chart used here. European sizes differ by country too: Italian, French and German labels can all differ from one another.
Should I measure over clothing?
Measure over light clothing or underwear, not over a thick sweater or jeans. Keep the tape level and snug but not tight. Take each measurement twice and use the average if they differ.
