How this calculator works
On a date in year Y, someone who has already had their birthday that year was born in Y minus their age. If the date is still before their birthday, they have not yet turned that age in this calendar year, so the birth year is one earlier. That single year shift is the only ambiguity once the before-or-after fact is known; the month and day of birth are not needed to name the year.
Formula
birth year = year of the chosen date - age - 1 when the date is before that year's birthday, otherwise year of the chosen date - age.
Worked example
A person aged 30 on 2026-11-01 was born in 1996 if the date is on or after their birthday, and in 1995 if it is before it. An age of 30 on 2026-03-15 also gives 1996 on the on-or-after setting, because the year of the chosen date is what matters.

Frequently asked questions
Why does one year make a difference?
Because a birthday is a date within the year, not the start of the year. Someone born in December 1995 is still 29 for most of 2026 and turns 30 near the end, while someone born in January 1996 is 30 from early January.
What if I do not know whether the birthday has passed?
Then the birth year could be either the on-or-after answer or one year earlier. The nearby table shows how the answer moves with age, but the true resolution needs the month of birth or the birthday itself.
Does this work for a historical record?
The arithmetic works for any Gregorian year from 0001 onward, but a record written before the Gregorian calendar was adopted may use a different year numbering or new year date. Centuries such as 1900, 1800 and 1700 are common-year traps when converting old dates.
