How this calculator works
Lowercase conversion applies the Unicode lowercase mapping character by character. That handles accented letters and scripts with case distinctions without a hand-written table. Digits, punctuation and spaces keep their form. The word count treats any run of non-whitespace as one word, so punctuation attached to a word does not create another word.
Formula
converted = text converted with the Unicode lowercase mapping. characters = number of Unicode code points. words = number of space-separated tokens after trimming.
Worked example
HELLO becomes hello. CAFÉ becomes café. The string HELLO WORLD has 11 characters and 2 words. A blank string gives empty output with zero characters and zero words.

Frequently asked questions
Does this change the original text?
No. The page works on a copy. The text you type is not modified, and you can read both the original and the converted result on the page.
Why is the Turkish capital I special?
In Turkish, a capital I can lowercase to a dotless i, which differs from the default Unicode mapping to an i with a dot. This converter uses the default mapping and does not apply a locale.
Does lowercase conversion change the length?
Usually not, but some characters expand or contract under case mapping. The character count is the number of code points in the original text, not in the converted output.
