How this calculator works
A square yard is a square one yard along each side. Since an international yard is exactly 0.9144 m or 3 ft, a square yard is exactly 0.83612736 m² or 9 ft². Rectangular measurements are converted to metres before multiplication, so mixed input units work. Pricing is specifically CAD per square yard. The estimate covers net area only; installation, tax, minimum order sizes and cutting waste need separate allowances.
Formula
Area = length x width; square yards = m²/0.83612736 = ft²/9. Cost = square yards x CAD per square yard. Missing side = area/known side.
Worked example
A 9 ft by 12 ft room has 108 ft², or 12 yd². At $5 per yd² the material subtotal is $60. A 10 yd² surface 2 yd wide is 5 yd long.

Frequently asked questions
Is a square yard the same as a cubic yard?
No. Square yards measure area; cubic yards measure volume and require a depth.
Does carpet roll width matter?
Yes. Net floor area can understate the purchased roll area because seams and cuts depend on roll width and room layout.
Can I convert an area without room dimensions?
Choose the known-area mode and select the unit beside the area field.
