How this calculator works
Find geometric volume from the selected dimensions, then divide cubic metres by 0.764554857984 to obtain cubic yards. Hollow shapes subtract the opening and have open ends, without end caps. The other-shape method requires a constant cross-sectional area; it is not suitable for a taper. Reverse modes use a known volume and the remaining dimensions. Price is per cubic yard and excludes loss, delivery and taxes.
Formula
Box V = LWH; cube V = s^3; cylinder V = pi r^2 H; hollow cylinder V = pi(R^2-r^2)H; rectangular tube V = [LW-(L-2b)(W-2b)]H; hemisphere V = 2 pi r^3 / 3; cone or pyramid V = base area x H / 3; yd3 = m3 / 0.764554857984.
Worked example
A cube 3 ft on each side contains 27 ft3, exactly 1 yd3. At $100 per cubic yard its geometric material cost is $100. A cone of radius 3 m and height 2 m contains 18.84956 m3.

Frequently asked questions
Is a cubic yard 3 cubic feet?
No. A yard is 3 ft in each direction, so one cubic yard is 3 x 3 x 3 = 27 ft3.
Which height does a cone or pyramid use?
Use perpendicular height from the base plane to the tip, not the sloping side length.
Does hollow-box thickness include a bottom?
No. It is an open rectangular tube with walls of constant thickness in plan. Add a bottom or end cap as a separate solid.
