How this calculator works
Divide solute mass per volume by its molar mass. One kg/m3 is numerically equal to one g/L; use that identity for familiar laboratory values. This is the solute mass concentration, not the density of the complete solution. Molar mass must describe the exact chemical form, including any hydrate. The concentration unit selector converts mol/L, mmol/L and other supported units.
Formula
c(mol/L) = mass concentration(g/L) / M(g/mol). The internal mol/m3 value is 1000 times the mol/L value.
Worked example
A NaCl solution with 58.43976928 g/L and molar mass 58.43976928 g/mol is 1 mol/L. A 0.2 mol/L solute of molar mass 100 g/mol has mass concentration 20 g/L.

Frequently asked questions
Can I enter mg/L?
Convert mg/L to g/L by dividing by 1000, then enter that number in kg/m3.
Is molarity the same as molality?
No. Molarity uses solution volume; molality uses solvent mass.
Which molar mass applies to a hydrate?
Include the formula water if the weighed material is the hydrate.
