How this calculator works

RNA matches the DNA coding strand in the 5-prime to 3-prime direction except that uracil replaces thymine. A template strand is complementary and antiparallel, so its orientation matters. The reverse conversion constructs the corresponding coding or template DNA sequence, not a unique original genomic locus. This sequence mapping does not remove introns or model capping, polyadenylation or RNA editing; it represents an unprocessed transcript or an already processed coding sequence.

Formula

Coding DNA: A -> A, C -> C, G -> G, T -> U. Template DNA is reverse-complemented when supplied 5 prime to 3 prime. RNA input is always 5 prime to 3 prime.

Worked example

Coding DNA 5 prime ATGTTT 3 prime maps to RNA 5 prime AUGUUU 3 prime. Template DNA written 3 prime TACAAA 5 prime gives the same RNA.

Frequently asked questions

Does this produce mature eukaryotic mRNA?

Only when the input already represents the relevant processed coding sequence. Introns and transcript processing are not inferred.

Can I paste a FASTA header?

Remove the header and any base numbering first. The field accepts only bases and whitespace.

What if I do not know which strand I have?

Determine the strand and orientation from your sequence annotation. Coding and template strands require different transformations.
